The Way Forward
We regret to inform you that Fr Vincent Kanyankole died on Thursday 17th July 2025 in a car accident in Uganda. We were all shocked by his unexpected passing, but we are completely confident that his generous, compassionate and loving life has secured him a wonderful new life in heaven with Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, who he loved and served for many years.
After contacting the Diocese of Jinja and local people who knew and worked with Fr Vincent, we have now agreed arrangements to continue educating and caring for the children Fr Vincent Kanyankole took under his wing. A Community Based Organisation (CBO) has been set up by 4 local people who knew and worked with Fr Vincent. 1. Kennedy Borgere, the Headteacher of the local secondary school, a nephew of Fr Vincent. 2. Fr Ronald Mutabazi, spiritual director of the Minor Seminary in Iganga. 3. Annet Nakadama, who looks after the children when they are not at school. 4. Edith Atim, bursar of the school and an accountant. Sign up to our newsletter to receive regular updates.
Your donations to JustPortion can continue to make a big difference to the lives of 27 children and young people, 14 of whom are orphans.
The Parish
Fr Vincent Kanyankole was the Parish Priest of St. Joseph’s, Ibaako in the district of Bugweri, Uganda. His Parish has about 4,700 parishioners spread around an area of about 1,000 square kilometres (625 square miles). It has 16 Outstations which he visited on a regular basis to administer the Sacraments. The Parish now has a Priest’s house but no church yet. The parishioners are poor subsistence farmers with no regular income. Their lives can be extremely difficult when the rains delay or when the rains are too heavy during the harvest time. When they are hungry, they ask the priest for food. The average Sunday collection in the Parish is £4 which is not enough to support priestly ministry.
The Children
Uganda has many orphans and vulnerable children who face difficult lives. It is a serious problem. Fr Vincent was supporting and educating 14 orphans as well as paying for the education of 13 other young people. To do this he relied upon donations from the UK. These 27 children are being given a good start in life despite their personal situation. Educational fees are approximately £60, £100 and £150 per month for Junior School, Senior School and University students respectively. Law and Medical students cost £200 per month. In addition, there are costs for food, clothing, accommodation and educational materials.
The fees and living costs for the 27 students amount to more than £8,000 per term. The orphans attend boarding schools, and a house is rented for them to live in during the school holidays. Annet looks after the children while they are living there.
The Parish House
Since 2023 Fr Vincent slowly built his Priest’s house. With help from UK donors, the Priest's house was competed in March 2025. The pictures below show various build stages plus the well with its water tower.
The Church
The hardcore foundation for St Joseph’s church was laid in 2024 but nothing has been done since (picture below). The Diocese of Jinja has no funding earmarked for building the church, so it is unclear where the money will be found and how long it will take to complete. In the meantime church services are held in the local school. Fr Vincent wished to build a church to seat 320 people. The estimated cost is about £100,000. This is very cheap by UK standards, of course.
